The Kittitas Valley Range is one of the few indoor ranges left in Washington State. It was built in 1946 by Veterans returning from World War II. The range allowed members to shoot all winter long, competing in the Yakima Shooting League and other pursuits.
In the beginning, the range was well away from the city, but over time Ellensburg has grown up right around it. At one time, high caliber weapons were used and the range had a swinging target system for center-fire pistol competitions. Since the city's growth, we have limited the range to .22 caliber rim-fire weapons and air guns.
Throughout the range's existence, it has been used to teach young people how to safely handle weapons as well as to teach hunter safety courses. Today, kids still come to the range to learn. The 4-H's Junior Shooter program makes excellent use of the facility to safely guide tomorrow's gun owners.
The range has been home to many successful competitive shooters, including: Ray Wheeler, National Champion Small Bore Shooter, Dennis Martinen, National Champion Silhouette Shooter, and Phil Sotelo and Cody Carollo, Washington State Small Bore Jr. Service Rifle Champions.
For more than six decades, there have been no complaints or accidents at the facility. The number of members and the amount of usage the range sees continues to grow and we plan to enjoy many more decades of safe shooting!
